Spring Detox: Three Treatments to Health, Energy, and Harmony

Spring Detox: Three Treatments to Health, Energy, and Harmony

The changing of the seasons is a wonderful time to reset our body, mind, and spirit. It’s a practice I follow particularly in fall and spring. When autumn rolls around, I usually allow myself twenty-one days to prepare for the colder months; but in the spring, I honor traditions from many cultures and dive deep into a forty-day cleanse.

In the article, “The Mysterious Number 40” on the Humanity Healing University website, it is stated, “In every sacred reading from ancient traditions, we see the mentioning of the 40 days as precursors in creating a favorable environment for change and the deep preparation of the heart through the purging of the old and of obstacles in order to receive a new set of instructions and preparation for a new phase in life.”

Forty seems fitting for spring, and here I’ll share my journey of three different services I received at SunWater Spa to support my purging of the old to pave the way for the new.

Juniper Lymphatic Massage

Knowing the best first step was to support my immune system, I began with the Juniper Lymphatic massage. Combining traditional Swedish and lymphatic techniques, this massage supports the body’s own cleansing mechanisms. The process is aided by Ocean Dew Transdermal Oil, which is a blend of organic botanicals––rosemary, lemon, juniper, and olive––traditionally used to support liver function, tone and strengthen vascular tissue, and boost circulation.

The oil’s aroma was heavenly, and the infused botanicals hold their own distinct properties to aid in the cleansing of the lymph system. They include:

Rosemary – boosts energy and enhances mental clarity.

Grapefruit – stimulates the lymphatic and digestive systems.

Lemon – possesses restorative qualities.

Thyme – relieves muscle aches and pains, as well as fatigue.

Juniper – purifies the body, acting as a powerful diuretic and stimulates the circulatory system.

Vanilla – promotes a sense of emotional security.

In addition to the oils, the technique the massage therapist used enhanced the botanical properties. She gently stroked different areas of my body to encourage flow into the lymph nodes. Pressure was also applied to various lymph nodes as well. I have never had a more soothing massage.

All in all, the Juniper Lymphatic massage along with a simpler diet, with warm vegetable stews and broths, set the stage for a successful cleanse.

The Chakra Journey

This massage was another deeply relaxing and rejuvenating therapy to support my spring ritual. According to Gabriela Silva, Spa Services Manager, “In this treatment, we use seven uniquely luxurious blends designed with the finest natural and organic ingredients. Each oil is vibrationally attuned to one of the seven basic chakras and their corresponding colors, and each will nourish different aspects of our physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Using these seven oils and introducing each chakra with simple keywords and with the delicious scents, this treatment invites relaxation and aligns the chakras so your energy can flow in a balanced way. You have nothing to do but relax and receive the treatment as a journey within.”

Massage therapist Drsta Govinda rubbed each of the oils into the palms of his hand and encouraged me to inhale deeply before he applied them to the areas associated with each chakras. As I inhaled, he shared a statement for each oil and the associated chakra. For instance, for the crown chakra, he stated: “This oil opens us to receive the universal energy” and for the solar plexus, he said, “This oil invites clarity of purpose and a celebration of our individuality.”

As with the Ocean Dew oil, the Chakra Journey oils, are from Body Bliss Intentional Aromatherapy. The company states, “the Chakra Balance range work to activate and nourish the chakras. These products contain a variety of oils, as well as botanicals. The product line includes:

The Sage Mud Smoothie

With each treatment at SunWater Spa, I was that much closer to heaven on earth––and this treatment was definitely the crème de la crème. The skin is the largest organ in the body, and we often forget it plays a significant role in removing toxins from our system. This body treatment was designed to support the process the skin plays in detoxification.

Erin Morrel, the lead massage therapist, explained the process: “This treatment features purifying sages and calming lavenders, and begins with a gentle dry brush exfoliation. Then a mask of Turquoise Sage Detoxifying Desert Sea Mud, will be applied. While the clay draws out impurities and toxins, we move onto a face and neck massage with a Prickly Pear Facial Oil, that stimulates cell renewal. A warm water rinse will follow, and the final touch will be an application of our Turquoise Sage Body Butter.”

The room for this particular treatment sets the scene for a safe, cocoon-like atmosphere. The massage table is placed near the center of the slate-tiled walls, and a shower area is on the far end, but within reach of the table. Dim lights further drew my senses inward.

While I usually begin my day with a dry brush routine, having someone else perform this ritual felt much more effective. Again, the directional strokes were to enhance the function of the lymph system. Then it was onto the mud.

A few years back, I competed in a mud run, and visions of that first filtered through my mind when I heard mud was going to be slathered all over my body. Those images fled quickly as the luxurious product, Turquoise Sage Detoxifying Desert Sea Mud, also by Body Bliss Intentional Aromatherapy, was gently applied. The face and neck massage with the Prickly Pear Facial Oil was next as the mud dried. The aromas lulled me deeper into relaxation.

While spa treatments may seem decadent to some, in this fast-paced and stressful world, self-care is necessary for our total well-being. We often forget to nurture ourselves while meeting the demands of others, and the next step in this Sage Mud Smoothie process might seem innocuous at first, however, it was the one that evoked the most emotion.

Morrel began washing the mud from my body with a handheld shower. At the point where my back needed rinsing, I sat up and as the water trickled down my back, she gently stroked my back to loosen any mud that wasn’t easily melting away. Images as a child, bathed by my mother, flashed through my mind. I then realized not many of us get the experience of being nurtured in that way beyond our childhood. That was the icing on the cake for the treatment––or so I thought, until the Turquoise Sage Body Butter was applied. I floated out of the room, rejoining the world with a renewed appreciation for self-care. And my skin was as smooth as a baby’s bottom.

A spring detox protocol can often feel challenging and filled with deprivation. However, when we embrace a cleansing ritual with the intention to be kind and gentle with ourselves––and sprinkle in spa treatments to support our process––there is light, vitality, and hopefulness awaiting us at the end of this journey.
