SunWater Frequently Asked Questions

 

When are you open?

SunWater Spa is open seven days a week. Sunday from 8am to 8pm. Monday from 2pm to 10pm. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8am to 10pm. Friday and Saturday 8am to 11pm. Facility may be open to the public earlier or later for special engagements.

 

Where does the water at SunWater Spa come from?

SunWater Spa’s pools are filled with mineral water from the famous Seven Minute Spring; the same water which flows from the Manitou Karst aquifer. The health-giving waters from our aquifer have filtered for thousands of years through deep underground cracks, crevasses, and rock faults, infusing the water through its journey with the highly sought-after health granting minerals.

 

How is the water heated?

Using our array of solar panels found on the roof of our facility, the natural water temperature is heated generally to between 97-104 degrees.

 

What is that I see when I look in the water?

Looking into our cedar pools, you may notice sediment or a cloudy substance due to what we dub ‘calcium bursts’. This phenomenon is due to the large amount of naturally occurring minerals consisting of calcium, chloride, fluoride, iron, lithium, magnesium, potassium, silica, sodium, sulfate and zinc. From these processes, large amounts of sediment and minerals naturally collect in and around the tubs. These formations are not harmful. We embrace the phenomenon as an aesthetic ideal and proof of the potency of our water.

 

Why cedar tubs?

Cedar oils are used in the practice of aromatherapy and have an array of skin care and medicinal benefits. These woods share many of the same emotional benefits, and their scent is useful in easing fear and nervousness, reducing tension and stress, and aiding in both boosting courage and bringing forth inner strength. In addition to cedar’s calming effects, many holistic and natural health practitioners agree that cedar oil has added medicinal benefits as well. When used topically, cedar oil can be used to soothe pain and the swelling caused by arthritis. Through its analgesic qualities, cedar oil also eases the discomfort caused by cold, flu, sinusitis and bronchitis, relieving cough and congestion.

 

As it heats, the cedar oil from the walls of the pools is extracted, first changing the color of the water to a yellow tint, sometimes followed by a rich dark red. By drawing the oils out of the wood, SunWater Spa is essentially creating a cedar tea. This unique process introduces the soothing and healing properties of the cedar oil, promoting healthy skin, a soothed respiratory system, and an enjoyable, relaxing aromatic sensation.

 

Am I smelling a chemical in the water?

SunWater Spa uses a three-part Clear Comfort sanitation system to ensure the purity of our natural mineral waters for your safety and enjoyment.

 

Oxidation: Oxygen is added to the water. Oxygen is one of the strongest-known sanitizing agents.This patented technology sanitizes our waters using a process similar to the way that air is naturally cleaned in the atmosphere. An advanced oxidation process creates hydroxyl radicals to provide powerful, immediate and enduring sanitation.

 

UV Light: The water passes through a high intensity UV light which is very effective in killing bacteria.This light is effective in destroying nucleic acids and breaking apart germ DNA. With their DNA broken, they can’t function or reproduce and the organism dies.

 

Hydrogen Peroxide: Hydrogen peroxide consists of the combination of oxygen and hydrogen atoms, which can be found naturally everywhere on earth. From our unique filtration systems, the oxygen and hydrogen molecules bond, creating hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide eliminates organic proteins through oxidation as organic pollutants are decomposed, and through this, the waters are disinfected naturally.

 

It is a Colorado state requirement that these bodies of water maintain a minimum level of 3 to 5 ppm chlorine. The Clear Comfort system in combination with halogen sanitizers keep our waters clean, healthy and enjoyable for everybody. We also use very low amounts of bromine (naturally found in ocean waters), along with the three-part Clear Comfort sanitation system to maintain our guests’ safety and the integrity of our mineral waters.

 

Why is this tub closed/cold?

SunWater Spa routinely drains, cleans, and sterilizes the pools. The majority of the cleaning is done from Sunday at 8 pm to Monday at 2 pm, but circumstances arise where these pools need cleaning during other times. While the majority of the water is heated by the solar panels found on the roof of the building, the reservoir used to hold this heated water may not be able to supply enough water to all pools in the facility at all times. Water that does not come from the reservoir comes directly from the individual tub sanitation systems, and because of this, the water takes time to come to temperature using the cedar pools built-in heating mechanisms.

 

In cold weather, the outdoor pools may close if the temperature drops below 98 degrees. Indoor pools are not affected by inclement weather pool closings.

 

This pool has a cover on it. What does this mean?

During colder weather, we place these covers to help maintain, or build, a suitable temperature for soaking. As a rule, the blue plastic covers are to be removed and replaced when guests are finished soaking, and can be done by either a guest, or if they need help, a SunWater Spa representative will be willing to assist. The thick, brown covers you may find are for long-term reheating, and due to these covers being extremely heavy and unwieldy, are to be removed only by a SunWater Spa representative and not by any guests or clients.

 

Is the water in the indoor pools different from the water used outside?

Yes. Our main therapy pool, as well as the indoor hot and cold plunges on the garden level are not filled with mineral water.These indoor pools are filled with water from a municipal source with added saline. These are the only waters at SunWater Spa in which this process is applied. We have chosen saline because of its buoyant properties, which helps guest float more easily. This added effect makes these bodies of water much more ideal for our water therapies.

 

Can I drink the water?

Because of the aforementioned sanitation measures, we ask that you avoid drinking from the waterfalls, water features, and soaking pools used in our facility. In the nearby park you can find the Seven Minute Spring, the main water source for SunWater, which is celebrated for its rejuvenating effects of body, mind, and spirit. We invite all guests who are curious about the internal health effects of the mineral rich waters of this historical font to try it for themselves. SunWater also creates flavored cocktails from this water, and are provided at multiple locations throughout the spa for all guests to sample daily.

 

I’m a Colorado local. Do I receive any discounts?

Manitou Springs residents and workers employed in Manitou Springs soak for half price on Mondays & Tuesdays. Colorado residents receive 10% off soaking, classes, and spa services on Wednesdays. Please bring an ID with your local address. See our website for a full list of discounts and services:

 

Are there any other regular discounts?

A 20% discount for classes and soaking is available to teachers, military, Olympic athletes, coaches and trainers, and those who are 55 or older. Please speak to a SunWater Spa representative to learn more.

 

Do I need to call ahead and reserve my soaking time?

No, walk-in soakers are welcome and will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. If our soaking tubs are at capacity, our friendly front desk staff will let you know when you may return to soak. We feature a private tub available by reservation only, please call ahead to make your reservation.

 

I’d like to rent the private tub. Do I need a reservation?

The private tub is by reservation only. The reservation is $45 per hour for one guest, and $10 for each additional guest. 4 person maximum.  

 

How can I make an appointment for a treatment, facial, massage, etc.?

I’d like to make a reservation, but I may need to cancel if my plans change. What are my options?

For services: If less than 24 hours notice is given, 50% of the treatment value will be charged.  If an appointment is missed, 100% of the treatment value will be charged. For Events: If less than 48 hours notice is given, 50% of the event value will be charged. If the event is missed, 100% of the event value will be charged. We ask guests to guarantee all reservations with a credit card.

 

Do I need to bring a bathing suit and towel to soak?

Bathing suits are required. Guests are welcome to bring their own suit and towel to use during their soak. If you do not have a suit, towel and/or robe, you may rent one or all at the front desk.

 

Are lockers available?

Lockers are located on each spa level for your convenience and are free for all guests to use. If you need a lock, you may rent one from the front desk upon check-in, or bring your own.

We invite suggest that all guests secure their valuables in the lockers during their stay.

 

I think I left something at the spa!

We maintain a lost and found for just this reason! Please return to the spa to check for your lost item. Anything left after three-weeks will be donated to a local non-profit.

 

What is your policy on nudity?

Wearing clothes is required at all times in the spa. During your massage it is optional to remain clothed, but if you choose to be nude you will need to be be discreetly covered. You will be receiving a professional service, if at anytime there is inappropriate language or actions, the massage will be terminated immediately. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone who engages in inappropriate behavior towards any staff members or guests.

 

What is included in a soaking package?

When you purchase a two-hour or full-day soaking pass, you will receive access to the seven outdoor cedar soaking pools, the large saline indoor therapy pool (when not in use for private therapy or aqua yoga class), hot and cold plunge saline pools, traditional sauna and infrared sauna, and the outdoor acupressure stream (weather permitting). First time soakers receive a complimentary towel during their visit. Other services are purchased separately.

 

I’m concerned that the high-winds/weather will close the outdoor facilities. Will the indoor pools be open today?

SunWater Spa staff has the safety of its guests in mind at all times. If inclement weather is imminent, we will close the outdoor facilities, but indoor amenities may remain open. Occasionally the spa may close entirely at the discretion of the spa director. What is World Community Yoga?

World Community Yoga is one part of SunWater Spa’s outreach program. All World Community Yoga classes have a portion of their proceeds donated to a different non-profit organization every month.

Do I need to shower before using the facilities?

To fully experience the benefits of our mineral tubs, and by Requirement of Colorado State law, we ask that all guests use the provided showers to help us maintain the integrity of our hygienic conditions.

 

Am I allowed to use my electronic device while at SunWater Spa?

In order to preserve the quiet and tranquil nature of this sacred place, the entire spa area is a designated whisper zone. Please do not take loud and involved phone calls or play music on your devices. Cameras are acceptable as long as they are used respectfully and discreetly. Otherwise, electronic devices should be kept out of site. Phone calls may be taken in restrooms, or outside the walls of the facility. All devices, including phones, are to be silenced or turned off completely upon entering the facility.

 

If I am late for a class or workshop, may I still attend?

We ask that all students plan to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to a class or workshop start time. Late arrivals will be admitted to class at the teacher’s discretion. Please check in with the reception desk before entering class after it’s scheduled starting time. Out of respect for the teacher and practicing students, please be aware of the unique atmosphere of the class, and adjust your entrance discreetness and sound level accordingly. Gather your props, and set up as unobtrusively as possible.

 

Do you have lifeguards on duty?

We do not have lifeguards on duty, please use all SunWater amenities and services at your own risk.

 

Do you provide drinks and snacks?

Snacks and beverages are available in our retail area.

 

Do I need to tip my practitioner after my treatment or service?

Our professional staff of licensed massage therapists, estheticians, waxing technicians, and watsu/ aqua cranial practitioners work to make your spa experience an especially rewarding one. If you have enjoyed your services, it is customary and appreciated that you leave a gratuity.

 

Are the products used in the treatment I just received available for purchase?

Yes, most products used in SunWater Spa treatments are available in our retail area.

 

How can I stay hydrated during my visit?

We have many water fountains, water bottle filling stations, and bottles of water available for purchase. You are also welcome to bring your own non-breakable, non-glass refillable water bottle.

 

Can we bring wine, beer or any other alcoholic beverage?

No. We are an alcohol-free facility.

 

Recreational marijuana is legal in Colorado now, are we allowed to smoke at SunWater?

No. We are a drug-free facility.

 

Can I smoke cigarettes or use a tobacco vaping pen?

No. We are a tobacco-free facility.

 

I’m pregnant. What activities are safe for my pregnancy?

Please contact your doctor or physician with any concern you may have before visiting SunWater Spa.

 

What are your age policies?

Our facility caters to adults and embodies a sense of a wellness and relaxation. If space is available, we allow children in our facility under certain circumstances permitted they uphold the type of environment we are creating. If we feel these expectations are not being met, you may be asked to leave. With this in mind, please also follow the below guidelines of our age policy:

  • No more than 2 children with one guardian allowed at a time (limited to groups of 4 total)
  • No children under the age of 6
  • All guests are required to sign a waiver before using facilities, guardians must sign on behalf of children
  • Children must be with guardians at all times
  • Guests 13 and up may participate in our classes with waiver signed by guardian over the age of 18. Younger children may be allowed at the teacher’s discretion.

Treatments and therapies are available to guests over the age of 13. Guests under 18 require adult supervision and waiver commitment. To receive treatments from our therapists, all minors must be accompanied by a guardian. If you have any question please call for clarification.

 

I’d like to have an event at SunWater. Whom do I contact?

SunWater Spa is a great option for bridal parties, birthday celebrations, or company team building exercises. We also sponsor cultural events, spiritual retreats and yoga-themed workshops. What is your policy on animals?

No pets are permitted at the Spa with the exception of Service Dogs. We strongly discourage guests from bringing a pet and leaving it unattended in or tied to their car.
